in in baltimore little or no impact. it's nothing like isabel. behind this storm labor day weekend looks cool and nice. satellite imagery, 1500 miles away to the center of the storm, we're watching the eye redevelop. the storm not as strong as yesterday but still a formidable force impacting all of the east coast with high waves. locally we've got a nice day, sunny, hot. the pollution levels bring us up to a code red. not the best day to be outdoors. the haze will build, guaranteed high of 95 degrees. let's toss to kim brown. >> thanks. we've been off to a good start traffic-wise, not a lot going on. we have some downed wires in the phoenix-monkton area at old york road and glen berry court. police should provide a detour. in problems in materials of drive times, no delays from 795 to 70. 95 southbound looking good between white marsh and the beltway. the harbor tunnel is clear. the beltway top side at 83, some volume starting to build, traffic managing to move at a nice speed. back to you. >> all the usual suspects, bowley's quarters, ellicott city, fells point, half half -- havre de grace.

help but think of what tropical storm isabel did to their homes. it was devastating. while hurricane earl is not expected to cause problems, for people who have seen the worst, better safe than sorry. >> i remember tropical storm isabelle. when she hit, but it this way. where i am standing, water was waist deep. back in 2003, it was the storm surge from hurricane isabelle that caused flooding and property damage all around the state. one of the hardest-hit areas was baltimore county. while the hurricanes current track makes what happened unlikely to happen again, officials say they are prepared. >> we're getting hourly updates. it is not likely to happen, but we are prepared to respond to severe condition. going to turn our back. we are going to be watching and prepared to respond. >> today at the baltimore county emergency operations center, officials from all of the county's department were briefed about hurricane girls current track and how the county will respond -- hurricane earl's current track and how the county will respond. >> it is all of our responsibility to be prepared f

is comparing this to isabelle. this is two completely different storms. this is not going to impact the chesapeake bay. and we may hardly even notice in baltimore and westbound. earl has been downgraded to a category three storm. it's still a major hurricane and still will main time some versesy -- some punch. labor day weekend will turn out beautiful. many of us are doing the races around will region with cooler temperatures and drier weather. we'll take you to the south where foyer about a day and a half we maintain a category four strength that is a rarity for a storm. but it probably peaked out and went through an eye wall replacement psychocontext the eye is looking healthy this morning, about zero, five myers across. a solid shape of the storm. but you can see it's eroded away on the south side a little bit. some wind share has started to impact the storm. and you'll get more of that as it rolls up the coast. the 120-mile-an-hour sustained winds and expected to be off the coast of the carolinas. still a category three storm and watch it pull away from the shore lines. typicall

to answer. this is not isabelle. by any stretch of the imagination, a completely different storm. isabelle chugged inland, pushed surge up the bay. this one stays out to sea. around the bay and baltimore, not much of an impact, a close pass on the east coast, already watches and warnings posted for virginia through north carolina, and we'll be watching our close approach to ocean city thursday night and friday. beyond that labor day weekend looking cooler but looking nice. here we go. tropical satellite showing us where it is, east of the turks and northeast of the turks and caicos and bahamas islands. we'll have the latest update in just a few minutes. taking you back home, a quiet sea, clearing and calm on the satellite and radar, across maryland. temperatures ranging from 70 in baltimore, 72 easton, 71 in ocean city. nice weather before that storm approaches. it's the seas starting to get angry. locally the hour by hour forecast brings us a high of 95 with mostly sunny sky. let's check on the traffic with kim brown. >> a heads up as you make your way through baltimore city on northern p

, the concern is flooding like what we saw during hurricane isabel. officials say not to worry, earl is on a different path and will be staying in out to see so we will not see what we saw during isabel. the effects will be milder, but you still need to prepare. >> at the beach, even the strongest swimmers can be overcome by the swells, the waves, and the rip currents that come through this area. >> a word of warning from the coast guard. baltimore city is doing the same, warning residents to be prepared and keeping an eye on the storm from their command center. >> office of emergency management has been on conference calls with the national weather service, a closely monitoring the storms. but the national weather service is predicting girl will stay out to sea, making the impact on maryland minimal. nothing like hurricane isabel. >> we are forecasting earl to be a glancing blow on the baltimore area. we are anticipating an active season, which lasts until november 30. preparations include having an emergency kit including a three- day supply a bottle of water. check on vulnerable n

in several places in annapolis, people are making sure their boats are okay. hurricane isabel that hit in 2003 brought back all sorts of memories for boaters, even the annapolis mayor josh cohen is not taking any chances. >> i think we don't know right now if it's going wallop the area or be just some rain and wind but we're taking every step to prepare as if it's a major hurricane that hits us. >> reporter: hurricane earl has annapolis on stand by. they are hosting race week, that brings hundreds of boats to the area, but of course officials will keep a close eye on the weather, if there's extreme high winds, then of course they will make other arrangements. reporting live in downtown baltimore. >>> emergency management officials have advice for people planning to head to ocean city for the labor day weekend. stay out of the water. waves could reach 15 feet on friday. trent sprinkle found himself in a rip current. >> i started to get tired. i saw the lifeguard. maybe he could help me. >> lifeguards made hundreds of rescues over the weekend because of rip currents from hurricane daniel

, some of them, to be honest, they are not that old. some comparing it to isabel. you can see a dozen surfers out there, fred i hope you're getting a shot of some of those guys, we're getting reports ranging anywhere from 8 to 12 feet with some of these swells and occasionally they are breaking a little bit higher, of course right now we're live on television, it's going to settle down. a little deceptive because the beach literally drops down just before the break and that's what is making those waves maybe look a little smaller on tv then they really are, but i'll tell you, they have been getting higher in the past hour and a half to two hours we have been down here. we're watching the tide it pull out and the next high tide is going to occur tomorrow morning between 3:00 and 4:00, that is the point that we're really concerned with because we've got to deal with the winds pushing out. the waves pushing on, and in fact just over my shoulder here you see this, this is the wet mark, this is where the last high tide setup and this is more than 12 hours before the worst of the storm. thi

, a lot of people are e-mailing us because they are concerned about what happened with isabel and the storm surge. this is an entirely different storm. when it is to our south, winds rotate counter clockwise. however, we're looking at highs maybe 1 to 3 feet, above average. it will quickly turn around to the north. and all of that water, if any does pile up, is going to be able to push right back out of the bay, with the northerly winds this. is not the same thing as isabel at all. and the biggest part of the storm surge is on the eastern side of the center of the hurricane. that stays off to sea. so we are going to see effects. the bigger thing we're going to see, though, is mainly along the beaches with the high winds with the wave action and the squally mr.. and we'll -- weather. and we'll have more coming up. >>> the biggest impact earl is expected to have on maryland is in ocean city. wjz is live there now. mike hellgren with more on the impact it could have on labor day weekend at the resort town. mike? >> reporter: mareep, it's the-- mary, it's the calm before the storm
